WJ V in plain English.
Woodcock-Johnson V Tests of Achievement. Reading, writing and math skills, read straight off the score report.
What it measures
The WJ V Tests of Achievement looks at the school skills a student has built so far: reading, writing, math and spoken language. The tests are grouped into clusters, so a report can say how a student does with, for example, reading words, reading smoothly, solving math problems, or doing math calculations, not just one overall number.
Who it is for
Evaluators checking academic skills in a student suspected of a learning disability, deciding eligibility, or measuring progress at a re-evaluation. It is usually given alongside a cognitive or processing measure.
Scores it reports
- Standard scores for clusters and tests (average 100; about two out of three students score between 85 and 115)
- 95% confidence bands where the report prints them
- Percentile ranks and descriptor labels, filled in by AUTOMATA's score sheet, not read off the page
What the score card looks like

How AUTOMATA reads it
- Clusters AUTOMATA reads: Reading, Basic Reading Skills, Reading Fluency, Mathematics, Math Calculation Skills, Oral Expression, Listening Comprehension.
- Tests AUTOMATA reads: Letter-Word Identification, Applied Problems, Spelling, Passage Comprehension, Calculation, Sentence Reading Fluency, Math Facts Fluency.
- Writes the strengths and weaknesses sentence for the WJ section from the scores you approve.
- Reads the printed score report (PDF text layer, or a photo or scan of that printout).
- Checks the student name and birth date on the page against the case before anything is filled in.
- Leaves a box blank when a number cannot be read cleanly. It never guesses.
- Marks every number it read in green so you can check it against the page; a number you type over turns back into a typed score.
What stays with the psychologist
The psychologist reviews and approves every score. Nothing is written into a report until you approve it.
In plain English for families
This test shows how a student's reading, writing and math skills compare with other students the same age. A score near 100 is right in the middle. It is one piece of the picture, alongside classroom work and teacher input.
